The Department of Seniors Affairs, in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture and exclusive sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, is hosting National Seniors Health and Fitness Day on August 25 May 2022, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Gardens. In an effort to encourage staying active as a way of life for Albuquerque’s seniors, the morning will be filled with interactive group exercise demonstrations, a mini health fair, health education falls prevention, health screenings, low impact walking events and Tai Chi. demonstrations in the Japanese Garden of the BioParc.

“It’s never too late for older people to start exercising regularly and make their overall well-being a priority,” said Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs. “Finding something enjoyable is key, and this event provides an opportunity to sample a variety of different activities that can serve as motivation for someone looking for ways to stay active.”

“At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, we are committed to supporting the health and well-being of seniors in our community,” said Janice Torrez, President of BCBSNM. “We are thrilled to partner with the City of Albuquerque for this special event that offers seniors the opportunity to learn about different ways to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.”

The event’s fitness demonstrations will be versatile for all abilities and will offer free admission to the first 500 adults aged 50 and over, including one carer per adult. Pre-registration encouraged as places are limited. Participants can visit any senior or multi-generational center in the city of Albuquerque to register or call 311 for assistance.
